Superbuggy | Project | Variations | CRP's in racing

This is my ongoing "Superbuggy" project. My goal is to recreate the
ultimate racing buggy from around 1982. Newly obtained parts and
the overall progress will be posted here.

This is my guiding star in my quest:

Update: 28.10.2008:
A small progress report.

Here is the present state. I have replaced the MIP front towers
with standard towers and the CRP extenders. I have replaced
the shocks with Tamiya Avante shocks, at least until I get hold
of some red Kyosho 1/8 shocks.

mono shock linkage.

Update: 20.10.2008:
Wow... now I'm in doubt here.... I did go for the MIP nylon shock
towers, and have fine tuned the front suspension to be really smooth.
But then this NIP package shows up on the australian eBay:

It's a brand new set of CRP shock tower extenders....
The last time I saw something similar on eBay, it was a NIB set of
extenders made by RCH. If you're reading this I'm sure you have
realised that I prefer CRP parts for this project, so it was a very big
surprise for me to secure this set for only 5 Australian dollars....
The RCH set I mentioned went for something like $80......
This means there will be a change in the plans, and I'll reconstruct
the front end with standard towers and these extenders. This move
will take the project closer to my "dream CRP" pictured above.
Well.... it's about time to look for those Kyosho Land Jump shocks...

BTW.
I also secured this set of coil-overs by Race Prep. I'm not sure where
i will use them, though....

Update: 05.10.2008:
Things are looking brighter now that I've found a rear cage! It's not
exactly the same as the one on my "dream CRP" seen above, but it's
close enough. This means I can finally continue with my fiberglass
"replica" of the CRP/RCH monoshock unit. I needed the cage to test
the prototype, as it attaches to the cage.

Update: 28.09.2008:
I forgot to mention the rear tires I've found. They're Parma, not CRP,
but who cares? ;-)

Update: 27.09.2008:
I got this skid plate and a bumper for only five bucks. I'll use the
bumper for my Rough Rider runner project, as I already have
one for my CRP.

And then I found some chrome wheel covers for the front wheels.

Update: 25.09.2008:
I have started to assemble what ever I have of front/rear end parts,
while waiting for the "Butterfly" chassis.
Here is the wide front end, with MIP towers, RCH ball ends and
standard dampers with CRP coilovers. I will swap the red plastic
spring retainers with some other alu ones. They look waaay nicer.
The tires are CRP/Dynamite Racing. The front suspension is very
smooth, and I think it's a good basis for a well handling buggy.

And here is the rear assembly, with RCH nylon A-arms and
spacers, nylon U-joints and Race Prep hardened drive shafts.
There's a brand new Thorp ball diff inside.

Update: 20.09.2008:
I finally got a "Butterfly" chassis, even if it's a repro.
I'll be starting to assemble the car, as soon as I receive the
chassis. The front end is completed, ready to mount. I'm
still waiting for the Race Prep driveshafts to complete the
rear assembly.
I also got an email from Glenn at Team CRP, with some
really good news. They are currently in contact with a new
manufacturer, and will have original "Butterflies" available
in both fiber glass and carbon, in a not too distant future!
Now if they only could re-release the cage and side bars......

Update: 16.09.2008:
Forget the soft brass u-joints, forget the heavy steel ones.
Here are some very rare NYLON u-joints made by Huco Presicion
Couplings, bought from my friend Jim.

Update: 13.09.2008:
Here are a pair of Race Prep hardened driveshafts.
...still looking for a pair of CRP's, though...

Update: 12.09.2008:
....and some chrome CRP rear wheel covers.
Now I just need some rear tires and front covers...
Update: These don't fit the SS wheels, they are for the RR :-(

Update: 11.09.2008:
Got some nice CRP/Dynamite Racing front tires.

Update: 07.09.2008:
Here are some nylon A-arms, that will be used on the CRP.
I suspect these to be MIP and not CRP. But if I recall right
CRP also made some nylon arms (both front and rear), but
I believe they were black (?). This pair have slots for dual
ball bearings, like the mk. I. They don't have the lugs that
restricts suspension travel, and they have shock mounts on
both the sides.... Maybe a clever way to fit a stabilizer bar?
If you look closely at the old picture of the CRP above,
doesn't it look like the mono shock unit is linked to the
front (normal) shock mount, and the stbilizer linked to the
rear? Maybe these are CRP-arms after all? Anyone?
UPDATE: These A-arms are made by RCH.

I'm also not quite shure who made these rear double shock
mounts. But I'll see what I'll do with them. I bought them for
the CRP, but I don't think they'll fit too well with coilovers.
I will instead use them for my Rough Rider runner project....
UPDATE: The dual shock mounts are made by RCH.

And here is a bad condition wide front end with MIP towers.
The towers are nylon, and I'll think I will be using them for the
CRP. At least until I get some CRP extenders for the original
towers. The main reason I bought this was for the RCH ball
cup hop-ups and the wide tubes. The rest looks pretty crap.

Update: 05.09.2008:
I finally found this 25 y.o NIB lexan body for my CRP.
The body is a clear BoLINK "Tuffak" body (no. BL2398),
used by a lot of serious racers back in the days. The body
was moulded directly from a Sand Scorcher body, and must
be the most collectible non-Tamiya body for any Tamiya car.
It was this BoLINK body and the Rough Rider look-a-like
"Hawk"(?) body made by Parma that were used
for racing. They were both lighter and more durable than
those beautiful (but heavy) Tamiya ABS bodies.

Here's how it looked back then. Cool, eeeh? ;-)

Update: 04.09.2008:
I got a bumper that looks very much like the CRP bumper
seen on my "dream" CRP/Tamiya Superbuggy. I strongly
believe this is the real McCoy, the CTP 3010 poly-flex
bumper, as it even has the holes for the widened CRP
butterfly chassis. I bought it from a fellow member on
Tamiyaclub.com from the UK, who got it with a second
hand Super Champ he bought from yet another fellow
member in Holland. So this bumper has travelled quite a
lot, and changed hands quite a few times!

Compare it, and make your own decision. Is it the real deal?

Update: 31.08.2008:
I just bought a brand new Thorp differential, probably the most
important part of any CRP Superbuggy!

.....and here's how the shocks turned out.....
I don't really like the red plastic CRP retainers on the long shocks,
so I'll probably buy some more of the short coilovers, and use the
aluminum retainers instead.....

Update: 20.08.2008:
Got some cool coil-over shocks, but they are all of the short
type that only fits the rear.....

....so I got some CRP spring clamps to put on the long
Tamiya shocks for the front:

Update: 17.08.2008:
Aquired a CRP damper stay stabilizer of the wide type
that fits the long/wide CRP Butterfly chassis.

Update: 12.08.2008:
Hardened axle bars for the front trailing arms:

Update: 09.08.2008:
Bought a brass counter gear...
Update to the update: 31.08.2008:
As the Thorp diff also comes with brass versions of the
other gears, this will find a home in my Sand Scorcher.
